April 15, 2004—Screening Professionals Unite
|
Scottsdale, AZ - April 15, 2004 - On March 29 and 30, 2004 more than 225 individuals
representing over 175 companies converged on Scottsdale, AZ for the inaugural annual
conference of the National Association of Professional Background Screener (NAPBS).
NAPBS was formed to promote a greater awareness among employers nationwide of the
growing importance of conducting background checks and reference checks. According
to David Hein, an NAPBS Board co-chair, “It is estimated that fewer than 35% of employers
are currently screening their applicants. Yet every day headlines across the country highlight
the sometimes dire consequences that may result when prospective employees’ backgrounds
aren’t thoroughly checked.”
The Association’s members are companies from across the country that provide pre-
employment/background screening, court records research, and tenant screening services.
Employers can be assured they are dealing with a screening firm that subscribes to the
Association’s goals and standards if the NAPBS logo appears in the screening firm’s collateral
or on their website.
Among its many missions, NAPBS will help develop and coordinate training and other
relevant programs to enable its members to better serve their clients, to promote and
maintain the highest standards of excellence and ethics in the background screening
industry, to ensure compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and to foster
awareness of issues related to consumer protection and privacy rights within the industry.
Tracy Seabrook, NAPBS Executive Director, commented, “Establishing a professional
association will enable its member companies to share information and resources.” She
also noted that NAPBS “is one of the fastest growing associations I’ve ever worked with.”
Joining the Association requires that prospective members abide by a Code of Ethics.
Additionally, NAPBS is developing membership accreditation criteria to further ensure
member companies meet the high standards the Association has established.
For additional information concerning NAPBS, or for a list of Association members, visit
the NAPBS web site at www.napbs.com, or call their offices at 1-888-686-2727.
The day-to-day activities of NAPBS are managed by an association management company,
IMI Association Executives, which provides NAPBS with a professional staff dedicated to
fulfilling the mission of the organization. NAPBS is headquartered in Durham, NC.
